Monthly Medal St. Andrews Fri 21 July

Having a rapid change at the last minute due to the course being closed (and we not told beforehand), we switched over to St. Andrews and played the medal there. With the course being in pretty average condition, it was a hard day for those that could not keep it on the fairways and only 4 players scored better than par. Peter Lenoury had an excellent game to come out the victor this month with 69 net and the lowest gross win. Charlie Heneghan was just not able to keep up but finishing with a good net 70, which is 4 shots under par on this course. Voucher king Peter Nixon, and Sel Wegner each scored a two on holes 5 and 10 respectively.

Andre congratulation Peter Lenoury on a great win.

St Andrews Fri 9 June

19 Outbackers set off for St Andrews owing to green maintenance at Green Valley. Others preferred to play Silky Oaks.

There were 2, 2,s claiming these was one of our Kiwi visitors Mark Humphrey, the other was secured by Chris Morton, who was partnering his wife New, New is an ex Green Valley caddy and no doubt helped him with his birdie putt.

In reverse order Chris Morton (5th) 36 points losing on count back to Sel Wegner (4th), Sel having 16 on the back 9 as opposed to 14 by Chris.

3rd spot John Player 37 points losing on count back to  Bob Mattes (2nd), Bob having a magnificent 22 on the back nine.

Leader of the pack Wayne Cotterill 39 points. Well done Cotty.

St. Andrews Fri 26 May

A personal thank you to Eng and Cottee who for the second time in a short period kindly agreed to split from there prearranged 4 ball, this to accommodate those who could not find the time to  use a phone to book themselves into the comp. For future reference if you are unable to contact Andre SMS me on 085 282 7177 and I will add your name to the list.

Unfortunately due to my incompetence at not setting the start sheet properly the result and scores were slightly different to those announced at the presentation, sorry Charlie you did not come third.

A division remained the same - Sel Wegner winning with a fine 37 points

Sharing second was Kim Danboise and Colin Goon With 35 points, both having 18 on the back, Kim with the better last 6 holes claiming second place.

The winner of B division was Mr Bob Mattes with 40 points not 38 which I announced well done Bob.

Second in fact was Per Loevgren, me being initially confused with someone with a similar name who plays off of 5. Per scored 38.

This error pushed Steve Watkins back to 3rd with 37, sorry Steve.

However , I did manage to get the 2,s right congrats to Kim Danboise and Per Loevgren

Vouchers are at the bar for Kim and Per

My apologies  guys I will endeavor to do better in the future, it was my first attempt at setting up a start sheet and I failed miserably.

FOOTNOTE by ANDRE: Steve you handled it well pal, hopefully the ferry is on time next time so I dont drop you so badly in the dwang!

Monthly Medal St. Andrews Fri 24 Mar

As players have become accustomed to, our monthly medal is sponsored for food by some generous sponsors, Broadgate, EuroPVC and Gecko properties, so a big thank you to their contribution for our medal events.

Playing St. Andrews in a medal is insanity, - at least so I though, but with Green Valley closed for the Singha tournament and the rumours still swirling around that they may or may not close after Songkran, the only alternative is Silky Oaks, and between the lesser of two evils, we gave St. Andrews a go for the medal. For the higher handicappers, it is probably an equal challenge as a lot of holes has water carries at Silky Oaks and not playing drop zones, that could be a killer for these blokes. As it turns out, only 6 out of 50 people had NR's at St. Andrews, which is about the same ratio as at Green Valley, so it may not be such a bad idea after all!

Joint sixth place went to Sugar Ray Handford and Kerry Beck, each scoring 1 under par 73 net. In joint 3rd place, Kevin Odea, Peter Nixon and Thomas Luescher had 72 net, with 2nd place going to Geoff Braithwaite on 71 net. Winner of this month was Mark Allen, scoring a fabulous 5 under 69 net to win the day.

Out of 50 players in the field today, there were 7 two's: Wayne Bridgeman, Geoff Braithwaite, Tony Pattison, Hans Heystraten, Adam Farrell, Martin Burbridge and Bill Peach.

St. Andrews Sat 4 Feb

On Saturday's we do things a little different at the Outback, so dont be surprised if you bump into some load Scandinavians bringing their jukeboxes with them on the golf course, not to mention an ample supply of Cognac, Beer and whatever drink they can lay their hands on that doesn't cause rust.

St. Andrews being a popular track and with 21 players today, the field was fairly large for a skins competition. Nonetheless, once some of our newer friends understood how this comp is run, they really enjoyed it. The principle of our skins comp is very simple - we take 75% from your course adjusted handicap (capped to a maximum of 18 hcp) and each hole is run as it's only little competition with the lowest net score after the handicap allowance winning the hole. Luckily I have a computer program that does it all for me, so all that the players need to do is just what they always do - play your best on every hole and score as per normal, but dont stress if you blob it, cause next hole, a new chance to win a skin comes up. Tom Nettleman came out tops, winning 7 skins in total, followed by visiting Scottsman Brian Davidson.

To understand the table attached to this message, each hole has the players Gross and Net scores indicated, and the winner is the one who wins the hole outright (and the preceding holes that are halved), indicated in blue. Have fun with the numbers overload! In the picture is Tom Nettleman and Brian Davidson.

St. Andrews Fri 26 Aug

With Green Valley closed for competitions over the next few weeks, we get to play a lot of the other courses in the complex at discounted rates. Next Friday we will give Silky Oaks a go since we haven't played there for several months already and it will be good to have a look at the progress over there.

For our round today, with two divisions being played, (A division up to 21), it was clear that the higher handicappers struggled a lot more with the difficulty presented by St. Andrews and there were no two's at all, which means that prizes extended to 5th place in both divisions. In 5th place, Dave Headington made it into the prizes with only 31 points, followed by Gary Lawson also with 31 points in 4th place. In 3rd place in the B division, 32 points from Brendan Cope was enough to earn him 3rd place. Gerard Lambert had 33 points and that was enough to earn him 2nd place. Bob Mattes, also with 33 points beat Gerard on count back to finish top spot in the B division.

In the A division, (Eddie) Edward Beilby made it into the prizes with a very low 30 points, then a big gap to Sugar Ray Handford with 36 points in 4th. Steve Plant had his 2nd good round for the week to finish 3rd, and Wally Brown had yet another good round to beat Steve on count back. In top spot this week, Jack Butler scored by far the best round on this difficult track and finished with a great 40 points to take top spot.

St. Andrews Fri 22 July

Thanks to Steve Mann who administered the golf for us on Friday and nice to see a good sized field turn up. Perhaps Steve or Tawan should run the golf more often so we get more golfers LOL.

Playing St. Andrews makes it really hard for some of our very high handicappers that cannot drive the ball far enough to clear trouble on their tee shots and with the PSC Silver tee system which is flawed and considered unsociable by some of our high handicappers, we will be running a bit of an experiment. Being a stickler to always play within the USGA rules, I emphasize the word experiment, meaning it will be very selectively applied and only on selected holes on a course like St. Andrews where it is impossible for some high handicappers to clear trouble. Under penalty of 1 stroke per selected hole, these players may play from the silver tee box rather than the white tee's. It makes logical sense, since they will just be loosing a ball in any case taking the fun out of such course so let them just take a penalty and play 2 from the Silver tee's.

Back to our comp, where B division 3rd place went to Barry Copestake, 2nd place to Bob Mattes and first place to Eddie Beilby with a great 36 points. In the A division, JP Maffray played good enough to come 3rd on 31 points, Peter Nixon 2nd on 35 points, and Sel Wegner played a really good round to finish on 36 points.

There were also a couple of two's, with Eddy Beilby and John Dearden recording a 2 on hole 10, and Stefan Hoge making a 2 on hole 5.

Well done everyone!

St. Andrews Fri 3 June

A surprisingly good turnout for a rainy low season day with a lot of stories of which Jimmy Little's must be the best. Suffice to say, with a few lightning bolts and some heavy rains, 3 players packed it in as early as the 2nd hole. For those that persisted, the day turned out quite pleasant, with nice cool weather.

Playing in two divisions, with Division B being 21 hcp and up, Mickey Beresford beat off a bunch of other 37 pointers to finish in 3rd place. Andy Makara did good to finish on 39 points in 2nd, and Ryuta Hirose from Japan who has been playing with us during the last few weeks, put together a nice game to finish first on 40 points.

In the A division, we welcome back Chris Wilmot who scored great to finish on 40 points for 3rd place. In 2nd place, Steve Mann scored a superb 42 points to finish 2nd, but even that wasn't enough to ward off Mr. Eddie Beilby, who scored a brilliant 43 points to win him the sandbagger of the day award.

Steve Mann cleaned up with the only two on the day.

 St. Andrews winners 3 June16

Ryuta Hirose (1st Div B), Andy Makara (2nd Div B), Micky Beresford (3rd Div A), Eddie Beilby (1st Div A) and Steve Mann (2nd Div A) all having a good time.

St. Andrews 2000 Fri 8 Apr

Finishing a very busy week, we played St. Andrews since Green Valley was closed for the ladies competition. It would have been great if St. Andrews was in as good condition as it can be, however they were busy sanding the Greens even as we played! Since we do have St. Andrews on our schedule a few times during the low season, I do hope that we will get the course better presented in our next outing in May.

Playing again in 2 divisions, John Stafford got the better of the course with 36 points to finish in 3rd in the B division, Eddy Beilby with yet another good finish in 2nd place on 37 pts, and our B division winner was Waldo with a fantastic 39 points. In the A division, Stephen Mann made the podium for the 2nd time this week on 38 points, and Jimmy Brackett using his extra shots from the yellow tees well with a great 40 points to came 2nd only by losing on countback on the last couple of holes to Brad Jordison, who continues his good form.

Jimmy Brackett, Kim Danboise and Cottee all scored 2's. Well done guys!
