Pattaya's inaugaral Songkran tournament was held on 16, 17, and 19 April at Burapha, Pattana and Khao Keow golf courses. In total, 68 players joined us although some players did not play all three days.

A great thank you to our sponsors, Pattaya Car Rental being the main sponsor. Outback Golf Shop, Chaba Massage and McAllen insurance who contributed for the fabulous prizes that was on offer for the winners and for novelty prizes. Together with other banner sponsors supporting this event, it sets a great benchmark for a 3 day golf tournament in Pattaya, and we will definately be back in future with this format with heaps of prizes.

After a rain shortened 2nd day, the tournament was open for the taking with several players in the running. After the last day's play, 7 players finished within 2 shots of each other, so it was a very tight result. Overall 3rd place was won by Hisahiko Makino with 110 points, beating several other players on count back. In 2nd place, losing on a countback based on the better overall score was Myles Knowlson who played very good golf on day 2 and 3 to finish on 111. In the end, the fabulous day 1 round of one over gross 73 which was posted on day 1, helped Dave Stockmanto stay in the lead and win our inaugural Songkran tournament of 2018. Dave was also the low gross champion.

Plenty of food, a good time after and fantastic atmosphere at the Prize presentation makes this a memorable tournament and thanks again to everyone that participated and help make the tournament a success.

11 golfers resulted in 1 flight, the winner being Bob Lindborg with 41 points no doubt basking in the glory of his football team winning the championship the previous weekend.

2nd place went to Kim Damboise with a very creditable 39 points, his first game for 2 weeks since recovering from a stiff neck.

Keeping to the tough C and D course for the second time in a row this month, it is great to see three divisions battle things out. The C&D courses at Burapha does not take any prisoners, and you have to be on top of your game to beat handicap on this course, and there is no doubt that the higher handicappers struggle a lot more on these courses than the lower handicappers, even with the extra shots that the higher handicappers receive on the slope rating.

So with three divisions, C division with handicap 24 and up had Rodger Ellis in 3rd place with 32 points. (Jimmy) James H. Little beating him narrowly on countback on the last six holes for 2nd place, and our winner in this division being Tom Parker who has been on a good run recently with 36 points.

In the B division, with handicaps 16-23, David Atkinson scored 35 points and loosing on countback to Phil Lamb with 2nd place. Barry Green scored the highest score today with 37 points to clinch first spot

In the A division up to 15 handicap, Charles Miller scored 34 points to reach 3rd place, Sel Wegner scored 35 points for 2nd place, and Grant Hall beat Sel on a better count back to win the A division.

Only two 2's and scooping some very nice prizes today were Peter Nixonand Fred Feucs.

Playing the AB course has become a lot more challenging than before, since management started setting the course up with a difficulty (magnified by a strong wind) and distance that actually matches how the course was rated in the first place and it is good to see again that only two players (10%) exceeded their handicaps.

The challenge we had was that Monday was a public holiday, and although management assisted our golfers to use our normal voucher system rather than impose an extra charge, we were caught very off guard by having to wait until almost 10am before we tee'd off, with the starter inexplicably pushing group after group of people in front of us. A few phone calls to the right people finally put a stop to this, but at the end of the day, the last groups did not get off the course before 3pm, a really annoying situation.

In 3rd place in B division, (Bill) William Peach scored a 34 points, followed by Doc Beard who has joined us again this year with his 35 points in 2nd place. Top spot went to Ed Turner, who said that he should have had a lot more putts in wasn't it for the yips on the short putts!

In the A division, Per Lövgren scored a good 34 points to finish 3rd, followed by (Acco) David Atkinson with his 36 points. Winner of the A division was Tom Cody on his 37 points, a very good performance on a hard track with very windy conditions.

The only two of the day was had by (Bill) William Peach. Well done today!

I have had several conversations with Burapha's Management about the ratings of the A&B course, which is rated harder on paper than the C&D courses, but usually attract a lot better stableford scores amongst our handicap golfers. Mike looked into it for me and over the last two weeks implement some changes whereby the white tee boxes on AB are set up to more accurately reflect the yardage of the white tee ratings (over the length of 18 holes), and the changes did make a substantial difference with the results much more in line with the expected scores across all players. So, out of 28 players today, we had in past rounds almost half scoring better than handicap (penalizing them subsequently a bit unfairly on handicap reduction), but not anymore! Today, only 4 players scored better than their playing handicap, with a good distribution of other players in the 33-35 points range, and great balance between the A and B division (which is a sign that indicates whether a course is setup too easy or too hard. Better high handicap average scores mean a course is set up too easy, and better low handicap average scores mean a course is set up too hard).

So with that bit of Trivia out of the way, here are the results:
B Division: Vince Connolly scored 35 points to come third, Shay Mitchell had 37 points in 2nd place, and Aussie visitor Dion Hyland an awesome 40 points to win the B division.
A Division:Neil John Lavery, a good 35 points for 3rd, followed by Steve Dull with 37 points in 2nd, and Pat Regan with a fantastic 39 points to win the A division. There were 3 two's today: Shay Mitchell, John Langley and Peter Nixon.

Another week where we play the more forgiving A&B courses and the scores at the top reflect this. As it turns out, you had to score 38 points today to make it into the prizes. Quite a drop below that however with 35 points being the next best.

So in 5th place,Tony McDonough scored 38 points losing on countback to  Colin Goon, who played another low 70's round to take him into 4th place with his 38 points. I am very pleased to see uncle Ed Turner doing so well today with his 39 points which propelled him into 3rd place. Frank O'Hara and his Irish compatriots have had a good run during their trip here, and Frank scored an awesome 40 points to take up 2nd place. The grand winner for today was Willy van Heetvelde with a great 42 points.

There were 4 two's today with Bernie Stafford collecting 2 two's, Ed Turner and Peter Nixon each recording a single two.

Back to A&B this week where scores are generally higher than on the more difficult C&D courses, and one would have thought with the beautiful mild weather that there would be some really big scores.

With 3 players scoring 37 points, it was all down to count backs as we see often nowadays, and Acco (David Atkinson) scoring 16 points on the back nine to land him 5th spot overall. In 4th spot, with 19 points on the back nine, John Langley held together another good round for 4th place. In 3rd place, with 21 points on the back nine, Sel Wegner came out tops on the count backs. In 2nd place, John O'Keefe scored 38 points and after having his score added up wrong on the card, our tournament software was quick to point out the mistake which led to Ed Turner having 2 more points than he signed for, resulting him being declared the winner with a great 39 points. Well done Ed!

Thanks to Don Anderson, Norman Reid and Kevin Welsch joining our regular crowd today. Playing the tough C and D courses, good scores are hard to come by and especially the higher handicappers find the conditions very hard on the C&D courses. With the division cut off at 18 course handicap, David Atkinson's 28 points was enough to hand him 3rd spot in this division. John Langley had 29 points which set him in 2nd spot and Barry McIntosh was astonished to find himself the winner at 31 points.

Things went a lot better in the A division, where 6th place would have been enough to win top spot in the A division. As it were, Fidge Button's 34 points was a pretty good score on the day and that handed him 3rd place. In 2nd place, Vince Butler had 37 points and Don Anderson outplayed the rest of the field with a fabulous 39 points.

Welcome back to Mike Stennett, his brother Paul, and friends Mark, a couple of fun lads joining us for a week or so. Welcome back as well to Barry Macintosh, joining us after a long absence. Playing on the A+B courses today, the scoring wasn't as high generally as what we usually see on the this course due to a few heavy clouds moving about and generally wet conditions after the heavy rains on the weekend. Our group was really lucky, the last group barely getting in just before the heavens opened again.

In the B division today, Barry Macintosh had 32 points which was good enough to make it into 3rd place. Ecco (David Atkinson) had 36 which was good enough for his round making it to 2nd place, and clear winner today was John O'Keefe, playing a fabulous 42 points to make it to the top spot.

In A division, Sel Wegner had 38 points which was only good enough for 3rd place, followed by Peter Nixon in 2nd place also with 38 but a better back 9. Sugar Ray Handford is getting back to form with a fantastic 39 points, beating out the competition and getting top spot again.

There were 3 two's today, Mel Hogan, KB (Jin Lee), and Acco (David Atkinson).

After a day or two from golf, clearly a lot of chaps where eager to get out and have a round after the new year celebrations, and we had 8 groups teeing off today. Playing the C and D course is always a welcome difference from the easier A and B courses. We also welcome back a few returning friends, David BuchananFidge Button, Carl Luke and the Kiwi's joining us over the last few weeks.

In the B division Waldo (Stephen Blazsanyik) came in 3rd place with 38 points, followed by Jon Kittleson with a great 39 points. Ecco (David Atkinson), the funniest man in town (judging by how the ladies always seem to laugh when he's around), scored a great 40 points on his ting tong handicap which will hopefully be cut severely after today. Great effort Acco.

In the A division, Svenn Lund's 34 points was enough to get him into 3rd slot, with Peter Nixon doing great with 35 points. The round of the day belonged to David Buchanan, scoring a brilliant 70 gross with 5 birdies and an eagle for 39 points off his 1 handicap. David's comment after the game was that he thought it was a mediocre round because he had 5 bogey's as well! Nuff said from a great golfer and a humble man!

There were two 2's today - Per Lövgren on hole 3 KB Lee on hole 8.

Burapha Mon 5 Dec

We're joined today by a couple of Siam weekday members who did not want to pay the ridiculous Holiday prices there, not that Burapha has a great deal going on the Public Holiday either by the way! Nonetheless, 14 players on a Pubic Holiday Monday at Burapha is good going and a couple of folks got really good value judging by the amount of points they raked up!

I don't think the Outback bus was ever hit by a golf ball, but as Tawan drove the bus to the clubhouse in Burapha a Korean chap's tee shot went haywire and he ended up smacking a nice little dent in the minibus. The normal thing would be for a Thai lady to demand compensation, (and plenty of it), but not Tawan. She just accepted the highly embarrassed Korean fella's apology and went on her way again. Let's face it, the way I sometime hit the ball off the tee, it could have been me. Although with my luck, the wallet would have required opening, no doubt!

In 4th place Bob Lindborg scored a very good 37 points with 17 on the back nine to finish in 4th spot. KB Lee outpaced Bob on the back nine to capture 3rd place. First and second place was an entirely different matter. How often does one loose with 43 points! In this case, the unlucky fella was Chris Thompson, who's 22 points on the back nine with 43 points overall got him 2nd place. John Langley shot a superb 3 over par back nine that gave him 24 points on the back nine with his overall 43 points. Great going John!

There were two 2's - Chris Thompson and Bob Lindborg.

Burapha Mon 26 Dec

Thanks to Kim Danboise organizing the golf day for me. By the looks of things, its been another good scoring day on the AB course, with a lot of good scores doing the rounds.

In 5th place, Jon Kittilsen scored 39 points, loosing on count back to Vince Butler who had a better back nine of 23 points. In 3rd place, loosing also on count back on the last three holes, was Per Lövgren with a great 40 points. Per also scored one of only two 2's today making it a good day for him. In 2nd place, Sel Wegner just managed to sneak ahead of Per with his 40 points. Big winner of the day (on his 2nd last game before returning from AWOL), was Roger Drake with an amazing 43 points.

Playing the easier AB course today, the scores were due to be higher, and no less than 6 people beat handicap today.

In 5th place, Kim Danboise's 36 and a good back nine of 20 pts was good enough for 5th place. In 4th place, KB Lee, shooting a great 79 gross scored 37 points. Sel Wegner, who had a great week of golfing finished with a solid 39 points for 3rd place. Brad Jordison, with lowest gross of the day and a superb 40 points is in great form to finish 2nd. Jon Kittilsen also had a great week and finishing on 41 points was a superb achievement. Well done everyone!

Jon Kittilsen and KB Lee each scored a two to complete a good day out for them.

Welcome back to a whole crowd of returning players: Raivo Velsberg, Paul Pedelty, Maurice Copan, John Kittelsen, Brad Jordison, KB Lee, Greg Jones, Karl Lell.

Playing the more difficult C&D course, scores are usually lower than the A&B course, and coming in 5th place with 34 points was Maurice Copan. In 4th place, Kim Danboise is continuing his good form with another good round of 35 points. Paul Pedelty scored an excellent 20 points on the back nine to beat Kim on count back for 3rd place. Angus Neilson is making the best of his holiday and playing some good golf as well, with a good 36 points on hand. The play of the day goes to Raivo Velsberg who scored a brilliant 78 gross which gave him 39 points. Good going on some tricky greens Reivo!

Burapha Mon 21 Nov

With the high season kicking in, it is good to see some return visitors joining us, some of them coming only once a year and enjoying the benefit of the Outback fetching them right from their hotels to join us for a fun day out. Well to our long standing Japanese friend, Kazuo, who brought 4 friends along enjoyed playing courses like Burapha, Laem Chabang, the Siam courses etc. and where tour requests match up with our society, we welcome such visitors to play in our tournaments as well.

Judging by the scores, our Japanese friends had a hard time keeping up with the field with Kazuo performing by far the best with a 4th place. Just behind Kazuo was Guy Lindsay Watson who also joined us for the first time, finishing 5th. In 3rd place, Bob Lindborg had another good round with 37 points in 3rd place. Jim Black joining us on his annual leave scored a great 38 points but Steve Plant took the win with his good form with a solid 40 points.

Jim Black had the only two of the day collecting a healthy ransom from the field.

Burapha Mon 17 Oct

We were joined by Graham Holmes this week on a short visit to Pattaya where he started making some arrangements for the TIAC tour that he hosts in March next year. Conditions on the course was great with the difficult C&D course made extra difficult with a thick rough which complicated manners immensely for the higher handicap players.

In 4th place today was Peter Stonebridge with 33 points beating Peter Nixon but losing to (Jimmy) James H. Little who came third on countback. Sel Wegner scored a great two on hole 17 and finished second behind Dennis Pelly who also scored a two and beat Sel on count back on the last three holes.

We have a lot of starters for Monday but please keep in mind that it is a Public Holiday and Burapha informed me that the Greenfee will be the weekend/holiday rate of Thb 1,400.

Burapha Mon 10 Oct

So once again on the A&B courses (which served as a good warm up for the PSC event on Wednesday, our players was greeted with the fabulous conditions at Burapha at the moment. Make no mistake however, the rough can be punishing, and with the wet conditions the course plays a bit longer than otherwise. The greens are as good as anywhere, they run true, in great condition and makes a very enjoyable day out. Scores reflected this, with again almost half the course getting better than playing handicap scores.

Coming in 5th place this week, John O'Keefe joined 4 other players on 39 points. His 18 on the back nine was the worst of the lot, hence his 5th position. In 4th place and welcome back after playing with us in Hua Hin, was Alex Field with 20 points on the back nine. Second and third places had to be decided with a count back on the last six holes, with Jim Brackett coming of worse and loosing to Bob Lindborg who still continues his good form. Dennis Pelly came out tops this week with a fantastic 42 points from his 13 handicap.

Sugar is a lot in the winner's circle nowadays and in 5th Place with 37 points with a fabulous 22 points on the back nine was Sugar Ray HandfordPeter Nixon is getting better and better again but with 39 points could only get to 4th place due to a not so good back nine. Was he chucking out the anchor cause he thought he bagged it with 39 points? Ivan Plunkett loves the A&B courses except if you make him play from the blue tee's, and since we were of the white's he had a fabulous round as well with 39 points to give him 3rd spot. Jim Brackett had the best back nine of the three 39 pointers and he finished in 2nd. Bob Lindborg who have been struggling for a while and who's handicap has been creeping up and up came good today with a fabulous 43 points to finish 1st. Well done Bob!

Only one 2 today and that was by Jim Brackett who scoops the pot! Well done Jim!

Burapha Sat 3 Sep Skins

Welcome back to John Low and his crew from New Zealand that joined our regular Saturday golfers for a fun day out. As mentioned previously, Saturday golf is a bit more laid back, with lots of beer and even music on course and the only time that we do allow gimmies. The reason being that it is a skins competition where each hole carries a reward for the lowest net score, so it has a bit of a matchplay feel to it..

Carl Sellick played yet another amazing round with a gross 72 and with 40 points he was the clear winner on the day. However, being a skins comp does mean you have to get your birdies on the right holes (as a low handicapper), and his great round wasn't good enough for any skins! Instead, Shaun Pullen got a crucial net birdie on hole 7 and 8 and fabulous net eagle on the par 5 15th hole to bag him a total of 9 skins. The other 9 skins were gobbled up by the Kiwi boys with Geoff Christie getting a nice windfall of holes 16,17, 18 wrapping around to make his birdie on hole 1 count for 4 skins. John Low's birdie 2 on hole 12 ensures that he got 4 skins and Gary Bancroft got in with a skin on his birdie on hole 2.

Burapha Sat 13 Aug

Our pot & skins Saturday format is gaining good traction and what a great bunch of regular Saturday players they are. This format encourages a great bit of camaraderie, and not serious at all. The rules are a bit more matchplay lenient and it's allowed to give your playing partners a gimme. Don't be surprised if you hear David play a bit of rock music, or be offered a San Miguel on the first tee. Whilst the game is played in earnest, be willing to have a bit of good laughter as you make your way around with a great bunch of blokes. Another feature of our Saturday golf is that (by popular choice), winnings is drunk at the bar, and if you are not there, the boys will have a few on your winnings on your behalf!

From the 14 players this week's lowest score was played by Wez Smartwho had a tremendous game albeit from the girly tee's by his standards. He scored an awesome 77 gross to finish with 42 points. What makes things even better, is that he scooped up 8 skins, and the big win combined with the skins off course prompted a bell ring which set the tone for the rest of the day (and ended up with Craig DoneThat Blacklockand Shaun Pullen doing 80's soul rock shuffles by 9pm! Such is our Saturday's nowadays!) Other skins: Duncan Rocchi (3), Darren Yates and Daryl Clark (2 each), Neil FarrellPer Lövgren and Craig DoneThat Blacklock 1 each.

Burapha Mon 15 Aug

Another fairly busy day at Burapha saw two divisions compete on this windy day. With the C&D courses closed, it was a bit slower than usual but not too many complaints.

Competing in two divisions, Bob Mattes got 4th place with 35 points in the B division, James H. Little made it onto the podium for the 3rd time in as many weeks with his awesome 37 points, (Barney) Jeffrey Clarksonplaying better and better with an excellent 39 points, and star performer in the B division this week being Peter Moon finishing with an excellent 40 points.

In the A division, John Fitzgerald had 36 points for 4th, with Geoff Harrison getting the better of John on countback to make it to 3rd place. In 2nd place, Dennis the menace Pelly had a great finish with 37 points, but the big winner, by a huge margin and a huge score again, was Sugar Ray Handford with 43 points. The handicap system is now catching up with Sugar, and his projected handicap for next week has been slashed to 15.8, fair dues for a very successful period of excellent golf for Sugar.

Out of 28 players today, Geoff Braithwaite had the only two. Well done Geoff and hope you guys had a good journey back!

Enjoying the last round of our Burapha promotion, we had 27 players across two flights enjoying the fast greens of the relatively easy A&B course.

George Hensher scored a great 38 points to get him into 3rd spot in Div B. For the winner of this division, both players had 40 points, on count back, both players had 22 its, then last 6 where Kenny Chung emerged as the victor over Gary Lawson.

In the A division, Colin Goon played a brilliant 76 gross to finish with 37 points in 3rd place. Yurie Murakami played another great round to finish on 40 its for second place, and Wally Brown made sure that his lovely lady's birthday was special (for him) by shooting the candles out with an awesome 43 points. A further handicap cut is off course in order for Wally after that round!

When it comes to two's, Gary Lawson and John Dearden both got some more beer money.

Burapha Mon 29 Aug

Playing the difficult C&D courses, scores were low. Some thick rough off the fairways had most of our golfers struggle to navigate the course and the A division, with handicap up to 18 navigated the course better. It certainly gives credence to the USGA handicap system which gives higher handicappers a higher playing handicap as the course difficulty increases. Having said that, it's clear that Burapha's rating on the A&B course are too generous, considering that it plays a lot easier.

In the B division, Colin Patterson came in with a third place with 32, beaten on count back by Ivan Plunkett who had a better back nine. Peter Moon won B division with 33 points, a testament again of how difficult the course played.

In the A division, Steve Plant scored 35 for 3rd, John O'Keefe in 2nd with 35 its as well and beating Steve on count back, and the winner, Tony McDonough being the only fella to beat his handicap on the day with 37 points.

Only Neil Skilton managed to get a two on this day.

With 16 players taking on Siam Plantation, our smaller than usual Monday Burapha group battled it out in one division, playing mostly from the White tee's today. With cloudy overcast weather and not too hot, it was a perfect day for scoring well, and a third of the field played better or equal than handicap.

Playing well from the Silver tee's, (Bill) William Peach again scored well to finish with 38 points in 4th. In 3rd place,(Jimmy) James H. Little played great to finish in 3rd. He was beaten on count back by John Fitzgerald who recently returned from Ireland to finish in 2nd spot. The big winner of this week was Barry Copestake, who's 40 points got him to top spot this week.

Burapha Mon 1 Aug

A record turnout of 45 players making use of our Burapha Monday promotion, we set off on a 2 tee start on the tough C&D courses. Reports are that the course is in great condition, with the greens mostly in excellent shape.

A great welcome to Wez Smart, a group of 7 Jomtien golfers led astray by @Harry Vinciency and also our group of 9 Marri Park golf musketeers led by John Leonard joining the Outback festivities. Arriving still tipsy after an all night bender in not unusual to see at the Outback, but @Beau Mette made it to the 4th hole before he though he couldn't play any further. However, some prompt attention by his lovely caddy and another beer or two got him going again until he reached the Outback, where he passed out for a 2 hour nap on the lazyboy in our aircon restaurant. Fresh as a Norwegian Salmon he was after that nap and reports of a quiet early evening was received.

Normally a group of 45 players require 3 divisions, however with 8 two's needing some decent rewarding, we restricted the comp to two divisions. In Division B, Adrian C Shelley scraped into 5th place on 36 points. John Leonard and Barry Macintosh had both 36 points and with the count back going to the last six holes, these gentlemen finished in 3rd and 4th places respectively. Dutchie (Darren Vanderham), scored a good 37 its to finish 2nd and 1st was Kenny Chung, scoring a very impressive 41 points.

In A division, Colin Goon pipped Per Lövgren for 5th place on count back, with Wez Smart (4th) loosing in turn to Bobby Driggs (3rd) on count back. Swiss Boy Urs Stegman scored a great 37 for 2nd and Robbie Barnes took the 1st spot honours with a great 38 points.

Two's:  Peter Nixon, Robbie Barnes, Tom Novak, Colin Goon, Peter Stonebridge, Ainthira Phisetrit (Caddy from Laem Chabang), James H. Little (Jimmy), and Greg Smith each recorded a two.

Good day guys and well done!

With the A&B courses still in very good nick after the Singha tournament, there were few complaints today, especially after the great promotional pricing we provide for the next few weeks to local Pattaya residents holding a valid PSC or IPGC handicap (Thb 1,450 all in). Excellent conditions, great value and a not so hot day playing at a good pace with no hold ups. This is as good as it gets folks!

The four ball of Jimmy Little, Ivan Plunkett, John Fitzgerald and Pete Stonebridge captured 4 out of the 5 top spots. According to Jimmy, even the sixes were tied till the very last hole! Pete Stonebridge with 34 points in 5th, Bill Peach with 35 points in 4th, John Fitzgerald with 36 points in 3rd, Ivan Plunkett with 38 points in 2nd and our champion today, Jimmy Little on a fabulous 41 points. Burapha Mon 18 July

First day back from an exhaustingly fun tour to Phuket and a small group of Outbackers played the A&B courses after a very exciting Singha Tournament. The Greens were clearly lightning fast, with the stimp sitting at around 10.2. The pin positions were also in tough positions, and, whilst Burapha A&B clearly gets slaughtered most of the time playing from the white tee's, this wasn't the case to be on Monday. Oh, and by the way, the Outback is running an exceptionally good promotion only for Pattaya resident golfers, with a round including cart and caddy costing only Thb 1,450. This is a full 250 baht cheaper than normal and a never heard of low price at Burapha, so please feel free to come and join us on a Monday to avail of this offer and join a fabulous crowd of golfers.

Sugar came out the winner with 36 points having had an exceptionally good run on the last three holes, with Jim Getty in 2nd and John O'keefe in 3rd.

A good turn out for us today at Burapha considering that we had a parallel competition going at Plantation. Playing A&B today, everyone was happy seeing the lovely Tawan handling the start today and I keep getting reminded by the players that they much rather hand over the competition fee to Tawan rather than me :-)

Slowly getting back to form now that his handicap is creeping up again, Peter Nixon finished 5th spot with 36 points. In 4th place, George Hensher is in the prices again with a 37 pointer in 4th place. In 3rd place, Aussie tourer and great supporter Phil Hill scored a great 38 points being beaten by Jimmy Little on countback also with 38 for 2nd place. Ivan Plunkett had a great round with 41 points, and I should probably think of pushing play back to the Blue tee's if Ivan starts getting out of hand with his wins at Burapha.

Burapha Mon 16 May

A great thanks to Peter Nixon and Sugar Ray for organizing the groups whilst we were away. Back on A&B course after last months coring and therefore a few weeks playing C&D, the A&B greens will no doubt be rapidly improving over the coming weeks and get back to the fast greens that we know at Burapha.

Peter Moon is playing better and scored a good 37 points to finish in 3rd spot. In 2nd spot, Ivan Plunkett was undoubtably pleased with his 38 points to finish 2nd, and KB Lee is getting back into good form with a great 80 gross and 39 points on the day. John Cunningham recorded the only 2 and scooped up the pot!

Burapha Mon 30 May

George Hensher has been complaining that his handicap is too high and has been going up for the last six months. That all got put to rest today as George, having struggled for many months with a bad shoulder, finally got a game together. Now all we need is for George and his marker learning to count, as he though he had 37 points instead of 41, so quite a big gap!

Luckily for George, the Outback is the only society in Pattaya that uses the PSC issued USGA software, resulting in zero errors as long as the gross scores are correct and pick ups are crossed out. And for those of you that wonder, the only time you are disqualified according to USGA rules is when you enter a lower gross score on a hole than actually achieved. You cannot be disqualified for putting down the wrong stableford points or add up wrongly, whether higher or lower. According to the USGA rules, it's the job of the committee (bar society in our case) to ensure stableford points and additions are done correctly, something which we are meticulous about at the Outback. By the way, through 100's of games played through the Outback, the score card error rates are consistantly between 10% and 20%. Innocent mistakes where both player and marker record the wrong stableford points on holes, wrong points additions, etc. Errors that wont be picked up by just manually recording the total points on a scoring sheet by the organiser as what happens throughout Pattaya, which leads me to wonder how many people in other society's are in prizes who shouldn't be, and vice versa.

Back to our golf on the day, Pat Regan who thought he had won prior to the above error discovery, had to settle for 2nd place losing on countback to Bob Lindborg - both with fantastic scores of 40 points. In 4th place, John O'Keefe beat Murray Sheppard on countback with 38 points.

Peter Stonebridge was the only person that recorded a two today - well done Peter.

Back on the revamped A&B courses, scoring was good again with half the field scoring better than handicap. In the top order was three players on 39 points, and in order of countback, Jimmy Little was 3rd, Kim Danboise 2nd, and Jimmy Brackett clinched the winning spot again.

Surprisingly, there were 5 two's today, with Bob St.Aubin recording 2 x 2's, and Peter Stonebridge, John Cunningham and KB Lee each scoring a 2.

Burapha Mon 2 May

Martin Kingswood rejoined us for a bit of competitive fun to finish in 5th spot with 34 points, beating Kim Danboise on countback. In 4th place, with his usual consistant form and scoring 36 points, was John Cunningham. Jimmy Brackett continues his recent good form with 37 points.

Winning the day was Maurice Copan who plays really good golf after adopting a new healthier lifestyle, and it's really good to see his handicap getting back to the lower single figures with 41 points after a tremendous 25 points on the front nine.

Bob Lindborg has been playing really good recently and he finished 2nd with a great 38 points. Speaking of Bob, we will be holding Bob's Birthday bash with a free buffet and some great novalty prices on the 18th May (this month), playing in a 2ball ambrose/scramble event at Parichat golf course. Find a partner and come and congratulate Bob on this day and take on Parichat with a friend!

Martin Kingswood, Maurice Copan and Bob Lindbord each scored a two today.

Burapha Mon 25 Apr

Dave Atkinson, aka Acco, became the fourth Hole in One acheiver at the Outback in the last 4 months, by scoring a perfect Ace on C5 measuring 129yrds. In Acco's words, "it was a proper shot, not some thinned bullet that got lucky", referring perhaps to some of the other hole-in-one's in recent weeks? The days of 10,000 baht medical checkups for Hole in Ones are over, but still a nice gesture of Burapha to give Acco a free golf voucher for his achievement. Well done Acco!

With A&B courses closed and our numbers still good but less than the pre-Songkhran months, C&D posed somewhat of a challenge with the thick rough in places. Greens not as fast as always made things a little easier, and in 4th place was John Cunningham with another consistant performance of 35 points, winning that position on countback. In 3rd place and also playing from a 8 handicap, Jimmy Bracket scored a great 37 pts. Maurice Copan had 38 points, and Peter Stonebridge was the man of the day 39pts.

On starters recommendation, I was told that the C&D greens weren't good, so we played A&B. As it turned out, A&B's greens were just verticut, and as a result in pretty poor condition with train tracks all over! Scoring was therefore not as high as we have historically seen on the A&B course.

With a good number of people playing in two divisions, John O'keefe's 35 points in Div B was good enough to get him on the podium, followed by Bob Lindborg on a great 39 pts to be beaten on countback by Ivan Plunkett.

In the A division, Brad Jordison was 3rd on 37pts, beaten on countback by John Cunningham also on 37 pts, and Jimmy Brackett with the highest back nine points to secure 1st spot with his 37 pts.

There were 3 two's. Bob Mcdowell, John Cunningham and gary Lawson.

Being away on the Hua Hin tour, thanks to Sugar Ray Handford for organizing the small group of players that remained here whilst we were on tour. Pete Stonebridge came in 1st place, beating Peter Nixon on countback with 40 points, and Sugar Ray came 3rd with a respectable 37 points.

Burapha Mon 7 Mar

A Sweet day for Sugar!

For the second time in as many months, we had a hole in one at the Outback! This time it was from Sugar Ray Handford, who not only scored a hole in one, but also a magnificent 49 points on his playing handicap (47 points on his PSC Handicap Index). Sugar clearly had a round of a lifetime, and that is a scorecard that he will frame, no doubt. Sugar scored his hole in 1 on the not so easy 12th hole, playing around 140 yards. Sugar celebrated with the customary bell ring, and he also received a nice Outback shirt with compliments from us.

On a sidenote, and for those interested in statistics and handicaps, the chances of a hole in one for a high handicapper is 12,500 to 1, and according to the "USGA Exceptional Tournament Score Probability Table" (You can Google it), the chances of someone with Sugar's handicap of 21 getting more than 10 shots under handicap is 37,000 to 1. If Sugar wasn't a regular where all his scorecards over many years was religiously submitted by a society and not Sugar himself, you could think he was a sandbagger, but I can certainly vouch for the authenticity of Sugar's handicap. Nonetheless, and rightly so, the USGA Handicap system used by the PSC is nabbing Sugar and his new handicap has been slashed to 17.4. Even with a 17 handicap, Sugar would have had 43 points on the day, which just proves what a great round he had.

Not taking away any credit to Sugar, there were also numerous other great rounds today at Burapha, which does indicate that we should maybe move the play back to the Blue tee's as we did a few months ago. Clearly Burapha is tame against the onslaught of Outbacker's ability and we should give the course a bit of help in defending itself, don't you think?

With Sugar being the clear winner for Div. B, Rona Carungay with a 43 points came in 2nd place,  Peter Stonebridge 3rd with 42 points and Ivan plunkett 4th with 40 points. In the A division, Maurice Copan narrowly beat Vince Butler to be 4th with 39 points, Geoff Stimpson came 3rd with a fantastic 75 gross (39 points as well), Peter Nixon 2nd with 40 points, and John Fitzgerald 1st with 42 points.

Congratulations to some good scores and especially to the Sugarman!

Burapha Mon 21 Mar

We have been getting the better of Burapha over the last few months, so we decided to toughen it a bit up and let everyone play off the Blue tee's. Well, that didn't stop the majority of players scoring well, and we still ended up with a third of the field beating handicap! In 3rd place, with a beautiful swing, young lady Rona secured a third place scoring 39 points. In 2nd place, Maurice Copan continued his good form following Hua Hin the week before to finish with 40 points in 2nd place, and our overall winner with a fabulous 41 points was Peter Nixon, who is obviously determined to defend his order of merit title in 2016! Well done everyone!

Burapha Mon 28 Mar

Welcome back to Jimmy Brackett, rejoining us after some ill health. Glad to have you back and hope your health keeps up with your scoring! Also welcome to Randy Hurwitz, who joins the Outback on our regular outings.

Playing from the white tees again at Burapha A&B, our Outback players did get the best of the course, with half the field equaling or playing better than handicap. In 5th place, losing on countback with a great 39 points was Ray Wilkes. Rona, who's handicap continues to come down nicely, looked like a professional on the day and she did not dissapoint on the scoring either, finishing 4th also with 39. Brad Jordison, playing a superb back nine with 23 points, finished in 3rd spot with his 39 points. In 2nd place, Jimmy Brackett played really well to finish with 40 points from his 8 handicap. Our winner of the week, last year's order of merit champion streaks ahead again by playing a magnificent 44 points and making it to single figure handicap after his great performance.

There were 4 two's today: Jim Brackett (2), Pete Stonebridge and Ivan Plunkett. Well Done everyone!

Burapha A&B Mon 15 Feb

Welcome back to Maurice Copan who is here to play a good couple of weeks of golf with the Outback. With the upcoming tour the next day to Soi Dao and Kabinburi, many of the regular Outbackers decided not to play at Burapha and save their energy for the tour and we ended up with 20 players in total.

With only a handful of players not reaching 30 points, the course played relatively easy and with a slight breeze, the conditions where near perfect. Ending in 5th place with 35 points was Bob Lindborg, 4th with 36 points was Maurice Copan, Dennis Pelly came in 3rd spot with 38 points, John Fitzgerald 2nd with 39 points and the man of the day was Geoff Stimpson, scoring a fantastic gross 72 level par with 43 stableford points, a truly remarkable performance from a great player.

Only 1 two was recorded on the day, and well done to Barry Macintosh for being that person.

Burapha A&B Mon 1 Feb

Welcome back to Colin Goon, Sel Wegner Tom Jensen and John Langley - good to see you guys again. Although we played from the white tees, it seems as if a few tees were back today with the blues, and with a few difficult pin placements, scoring wasn't as easy as usual.

Roy Studds finally got somewhat of a game undrway by scoring 33 points to finish in 3rd place in Division B. Ahead of him, Bruce McAdam also had 33 points but with a better back 9, finished in 2nd place. Front runner playing steady golf on his 24 handicap was Bob Lindborg. In the A division, Paul Smith playing on 3 handicap had his usual excellent and steady gross 75 which equates to 36 points to come 3rd on countback.  Beating Paul on countback was Kim Danboise, who continues to improve as his lessons is finally helping him to play more consistant golf. The winner of the day was Mike Missler who who finally overcame his injuries and playing closer to his real ability, I am sure that we will continue to see a drop in his handicap.

I guess the most surprising thing of the day was that only one person recorded two's, as both two's on the day was from Colin Goon, who walked away with a handsome pot in the two's allocation.

Burapha A&B Mon 22 Feb

A beautiful day for golf with a slight breeze and mild temperatures reminds one again that this is a great time of the year and a place that can and should be enjoyed! Playing in two divisions today, it was a surprise that there weren't many good scores, and no two's. It could be attributed to the greens being lightning fast and some difficult pin placements, even by Burapha standards.

I accompanied Nicholas Jenkins, a young aspiring pro golfer (+2 hcp) and we played from the Black tee's. Not nearly as accurate as I was year's ago, I was pleased to still be beating the young lad by a few yards on the front nine drives, scoring birdies on the par 5's before my dreaded snap hooked returned on the back nine. The slope rating plus the black tee index gave me a few shots boost on playing handicap, which helped me to stay ahead of the pack to finish first in the A division with 37 pts. Second was KB Lee, beating Owen Llyod on countback with each scoring 34 pts. In the B division, Bruce Mcadam had a great round to finish on 40pts, with a string of players far behind on 34 points, with Jimmy Little finishing 2nd and John Langley (3rd). No two's today:

Burapha C&D Mon 29 Feb

Playing the C&D courses this week, another good field turned up and we welcome Lindsay Hawkes and his mates Paul Watts and Darren Bennett.

The C&D course always plays a little harder, so it was encouraging to see some really good scores come in. In the B division (hcps 18 and up), we saw Bob Lindborg getting a good score again with 33 points to land him 3rd place. In 2nd place, with a very good 36 points was Paul Watts, and the B division winner was Ed turner with a great 38 points. Great to see Ed come good in your last week playing with us before you leave back to the USA, and we look forward to welcome you back again in a couple of weeks.

In the A division, Dennis Pelly enjoyed his favorite course enough to get him 35 points in 3rd place.
