Green Valley Fri 27 November

We had a good turnout today with 9 groups starting on a near perfect day, weather wise, at least. After a bit of a flurry with last minute changes, we got off to an early start and for once, everyone that I had spoken to, commented on how good pace of play was today. The Greens were near perfect by Green Valley standards, running at a good pace, and it is good to see Green Valley getting back in shape.

We had quite a couple of new faces, with Barry Wellings, Jon Goddard, Chris Morton and a lovely couple from Japan joining us. Welcome Yurte Murakami and Yasumasa Arakawa. With Asian golf tourism picking up and Western tourism declining, it is a prospect which I am particularly pleased about since all golfers who adhere to the correct etiquette and ethics will also be welcomed with open arms at the Outback.

With 2 divisions and 4 positions paying, Yurte Murakami, playing off her 16 handicap scored 33 points to finish 4th in division 2. Andy Makara continues his good form recently to finish 3rd with 36 points. With 37 points, Tom Byrne came in 2nd position, and yet again, Eddie the bandit Beilby came in 1st place with an excellent 39 points. Well done Eddie and the rest! In first division, equally good scores were on offer, with David Day recording 36 points for 4th spot, Yasumasa Arakawa in 3rd spot with 37 points, Mathias Hermann, who continues to impress with his great looking swing getting 38 points for 2nd place. Prime position this week goes to Wayne Cotterell, scoring a superb 39 points from his 12 handicap.

Surprising for such a large field with the greens in great nick, but we "only" saw 4 two's this week with Yasu, Wayne and Stevie Mann recording a two on the shortened hole 12, and Tom Byrne recording a two on hole 8.

In our featured picture this week, John Stafford 5th in Div 2 (he just wanted to show off his Billabong shirt - LOL), Cotty (Div 1 - 1st), Yurte (Div 2 - 4th), Yasu (Div 1 - 3rd), Tom Byrne (Div 2 - 2nd), and Mr. Beilby (Div 2 - 1st). Congrats to all! (Well maybe not John so much...haha)

Khao Keow Weds 25 November

A couple of weeks ago when we went back to Khao Keow, there were some marked improvements from the last time we played back in July and after which we decided to dump the course due to poor form. Returning this week, reviews could not have been better and everyone thought the greens were back to Khao Keow standards, the course looked absolutely amazing, and everyone suggested that it should be a keeper for our alternate Wednesdays.

Playing off the white tee's on the difficult B and C courses, with a stiff wind requiring 2 extra clubs into the wind, the scoring did not reflect the good condition of the course, and in general, everyone seemed to have struggled to such an extend that not a single player managed better than 32 points. Tied with 32 points, were 4 players however, all decided on countback with Andy Makara in 4th, Geoff Stimpson in 3rd, Stevie Mann in 2nd, and for some odd reason, always at the top, Peter Nixon!

We had two 2's today with Peter Nixon and Geoff Stimpson both recording theirs on hole 17 (C8).

Competition Results:

Overall Position 10 Players Score (Course H'cap)
1 Nixon, Peter 32 pts (11)
2 Mann, Stephen 32 pts (12)
3 Stimpson, Geoff 32 pts (08)
4 Makara, Andy 32 pts (28)
5 Brown, Wally 31 pts (16)
6 Handford, Sugar Ray 31 pts (20)
7 Missler, Mike 27 pts (11)
8 Kittilsen, Jon 24 pts (20)
9 Braemer, Greg 23 pts (32)
10 Thompson, Chris 23 pts (26)

Burapha A&B Mon 23 Nov

As promised last week, we toughened things up a bit this week and let every one play off the blues, after last week when half the field shot better than handicap off the whites. I didn't hear too many complaints, except from Ivan Plunkett (LOL), and I think the conditions suited the extra length a bit better with the extra roll now that the rain has receded a bit.

Welcome to Don Anderson, Ian Heddle, John Langley, Bernie Stafford and Andy Butts - always good to have the quality of our field improve a bit! Just kidding guys...

In 2nd division, Pete Stonebridge continues his good form with 37 points to beat Wally Brown on countback into 3rd spot. Bob Lindborg scored a brilliant 38 points, and Dennis Pelly shot the lights out so to speak with a fantastic 43 - and that from the blue tees! In 1st division, Andy Butts came in 3rd spot with a 34 points, and pals Jim Black and Angus Neilson fighting it out for the honours with 37 points each. On countback, Angus came out on top.

Three two's today: Thierry Petrement [A6], Ian Heddle [B8] and John O'Keefe [B8].

Well done everyone!

With Green Valley getting better and better, we didn't play preferred lie's this week and everyone was commenting that the greens are a lot better but still a little slow. No wonder that the scores are also improving even with the difficult medal format.

A couple of return visitors, Angus Neilsson and Jim Black made it back to us, so a warm welcome back to you guys. Actually, to my chagrin I must add, since the first thing that Angus did was take a friendly with me on the longest drive on the par 5, hole 4. Having hit my tee shot on hole one to within 80 yrds for a 64 lob in, and then hitting my 5 wood over the green on hole 3, I thought it would be a piece of cake. But as my golf goes, - wham, snap hook left into the water on hole 4 and with that my pride drifting to the bottom of the pond! Such is my golf... sigh...

Anyway, back to the important people, in 5th place with a net 72 was David Davies. With my driver having deserting me, I made life easy for Geoff Stimpson who once again took the laurels on low gross with 78 and a shared 5th spot on net 72. Kim Danboisy played a 71 net for solo 3rd place. At the top, Bruce McAdam and Wally Brown both scored a fabulous 70 net, with B2, like last month, losing out on again on countback for the coveted Medal trophy. Keep going B2, next month it will be yours I'm sure!

Four two's recorded today, with Andre Coetzee, David Davies, Sugar Ray Handford and Bob Finley each recording a two.

Well done guys! Next months medal event will be on the 11th of December, same place, same time.

In our featured picture this week, from left to right: Kim Danboise (3rd), Wally Brown (1st and trophy winner), and Bruce McAdam (joint 1st but loosing the trophy on countback and instead holding a beer)
